What is sound healing?

Sound healing is a holistic approach to wellness, as it influences us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

With various instruments, sound is used to bring you into deep states of relaxation promoting the release of endorphins and a natural state of homeostasis. Healing, stress release, emotional balance, pain reduction, depression and anxiety relief and more are experienced in a deep internalized state akin to meditation, with no known side effects.

In my practice, I use instruments such as, Himalayan singing bowls, toning and mantras, gongs, temple bells, flutes and more.

Sound healing has existed for thousands of years in most cultures across the globe. It has been, and continues to be used to promote balance and well-being on all levels.

How does sound healing work?

Sound healing works by leading us into a relaxed and deep inner awareness akin to a deep state of meditation. The vibrations from the instruments sooth the body and encourage the release of tension and ease physical pain and discomfort. Our energy centers become stimulated and begin to release emotional content from past experiences and traumas from the body.

How does sound healing affect us?

Mental

Sound affects us first psychoacoustically, meaning it has it an impact in our brain. We have two hemispheres in our brain, a left and a right. The left is associated with logic, reasoning, language and when it is dominant we are normally externalized and not focused on our inner state or emotions, we are in an analytical state. The right side is associated with perceiving things whole, (without judgement), emotions, creativity and internal awareness.

There are five main brainwave states, we naturally have more than one or all active all the time, but one is usually dominant as is one hemisphere as well.

Sound healing brings us very quickly into the right hemisphere and when we become relaxed, it is from there that we experience the different brain waves and become deeply relaxed and internalized. Brainwaves such as the Alpha and Theta are where we reach these deep states.

It is in the powerful theta brainwave that we access the subconscious mind, once we reach a deep internalized awareness our body begins to respond favorably to our intention for the session. It is not that theta is the most powerful brain wave, because they are all equally important, it is what we consciously intend to change and we access the subconscious to make that change in the theta state.

Physical

When we look at the body under a microscope, we see that it is a vibrating mass of atoms. Everything has a vibration to it and everything responds to vibration. The human body is no different.

Sound healing also has a physical effect on us, the sound waves enter the body and when the instruments such as the Tibetan bowls are placed on the body. They produce a vibration which is felt in the region of the body it is played on. The subtle vibration is very soothing and relaxing to the body. This effect only helps us to get deeper into the inner awareness we want to achieve. The larger gongs when struck softly produce a very deep resonating frequency that is also felt physically. Sound healing is very tangible. The human body being made of 60 to 70% water makes us very responsive to sound as water itself is very conductive to sound.

Emotional

The effect sound healing has on our emotions is quite remarkable.  All emotions vibrate in the body when we experience them. When we have repeated stressful experiences or trauma this causes intense emotions to present themselves. They can change the vibration in the location of the body they arise in and essentially become a trapped emotion.  Most often this results in an imbalanced energy center in the body as well. This can lead to a disruption in the optimal frequency of that part of the body, and can lead to possible physical problems.

Sound can be introduced in the proper frequency to entrain the area back to an optimal vibration, resulting in an emotional release and a feeling of balance in the body.

Sound healing is highly effective at revealing trapped emotions in the body, helping you to release them and restoring balance.

Spiritual

Sound can open doors to inner worlds, and has been used to do so for thousands of years. Shamans have used sound among other tools to access the higher dimensions and facilitate communication with the spirit worlds. When I use sound in my workshops and sessions, I often connect with archetypal energies and higher dimensional beings, as they enter my energy field they can send energy out with the sound for healing. For personal use, sound can help an individual access deep internal states and make connections with spirit guides.

What is a session like?

When a client arrives, before we move to working with sound we have a brief discussion about the intention for the session so it is clear what will be worked on. The client lays on a thick, comfortable foam mat. The session always begins with prayer and setting the intention. Instruments are chosen based on the desired intention, and will include some of the following. Himalayan singing bowls, gongs, voice/toning, temple bells, flutes, hand drums, and more. Usually only a few instruments are used and all sessions include singing bowls as a staple due to their diversity in application and use.

Sound remains at work for 12 to 36 hours or longer before it has settled in the body.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies depending on the desired result and is comparable to acupuncture in terms of frequency of sessions. Generally it is 1 to 5 sessions for an individual issue, again this depends on many factors and symptoms. You will be your own best judge on how you feel and how much improvement you are experiencing.  The results will speak for themselves and I will not suggest a set amount of sessions.
